Back in the 80s and 90s when houses were cheap, young guys would set up wood shops in their garages, restore cars, etc. They could afford the space to comfortably enjoy their hobbies.
Now, it's much easier and cheaper just to play video games, which really develops no skills and just replicates a false feeling of achievement.
This issue affects a lot of different sects in society. Wages and the cost of local services in particular since a shop's overhead is directly tied to it's rental costs. That's why it costs upwards of $200 to get a oil change at a place. The wagie gets $20/hr because a 2000 square foot bay costs 5k a month alone.
The only way to promote healthy dynamics and society is affordable real estate. People have to own space to grow and create in. They need to be a part of the society they live in through ownership.
