Some people in defense rationalize their work by telling themselves that the products they design might one day save an American life. Not me; I think about all the stone age savages who will be ripped apart by the munitions we build. It's fucking awesome.
Most of my PhD cohort are doing gay shit like designing pharmaceuticals for HIV or data analysis for ride share companies. I get to tell them when we meet up, that I'm designing a 40 mm autocannon controlled by AI. Fuckin SWEET!
