One major thing about media between East and West is that we tend to assume a just universe. Shit happens, but in the end bad people will get punished and good people will be rewarded. That's not a thing in Japan. The good guys can lose utterly. And that tends to make for better drama, because the danger isn't an empty threat.
In a nutshell, that's why Asian horror (Korean as well as Japanese) is usually intrinsically better than American horror. Lovecraftian horror is a notable exception to this, because humanity has fuckall chance. The best we can against with the monsters is keep them hidden a bit longer.
