I think it's the fact that a lot of "Irish" Americans with less than half Irish blood still have this attitude of "ha my great grandpa was from cork so I'm just as Irish as you", also some of them don't really know anything about Ireland and just use their Irish heritage as an excuse to get drunk on "Patty's" day
