From all studies I have seen, 50% of men were bald 100 yrs, 200yrs, 500yrs ago... just as today. It is a DNA-heritage related effect which has not been "natural selected" through evolution... simply because women still sleep with men which are balding or before they go bald. Interestingly enough, women who go bald early in their life (yes, this exists) have a damn sure lower chance of procreating, which means only 10% of women have hair loss in their lives.
