My best candidate that I can suggest is that part of ego/personality which wants to prevent you from experiencing spiritual illumination. The last obstacle one faces before attainment, as the ego holds on to dear life. Even then, I feel like "Satan" here is more just "doing his job". Trust me, you wouldn't want to live in a world where one can whoops accidentally themselves into dissolution of the "self". It's better that a "guardian" of sorts exists to make that difficult, perhaps.
The Sufi conception of Iblis as a misguided tempter who nevertheless serves God in his own way is probably more apt a description for this function than some great adversary. To even suggest that "God" could have a great adversary is laughable in the first place. Anyways, given what my definition of "Satan" is, no I would not say that he's about equality. Baphomet is a different can of worms though.
