Reason is cost and values. Today with technology that we have houses can be built cheaper and more efficient. For example walls dont have to be 1 meter thicc to isolate. Also it has a lot to do with cultural relativism and modernism which encourages ugly things to be built in order to prove some kind of degenerate moral point.
Today architects are "individuals" so they must express themselves as some kind of modern "artists". No more does architect construct for the people but he constructs for himself.
