It was done in the 1800s and was common by the mid-1900s (search for "impacted third molar" or their Latin name "dentes sapientiae"). Not everyone needs them removed since everyone's face is different and the number of wisdom teeth you get can vary since they're supernumerary. I still have mine, they're just pushed out a bit because there's not quite enough space for them and the right one has little bit of gum skin over the back. If you're not having issues with them then don't bother, but sometimes they can fuck up a person and they need them out.
