She stops the thought and sighs. There’ll be plenty of time later to satiate that other side of herself. For now, she had to stay focused on her mission. She needed to earn Cassie’s trust, make her aware of their family’s heritage once the time was right, then gradually sway her toward carrying out The Foremother’s bidding. That was all that mattered. The Foremother would surely bless her if she succeeded.
And as far as Lexi was concerned, she was off to a good start. The spear through the cage she delivered to Cassie’s enemy ought to live on in her cousin’s memory for as long as it would the fans’. And the fact she was invited here, to the business side of Cassie’s operation could indicate she was well on her way to being considered part of the inner circle. But Lexi knew she had to be careful. After the way Cassie manoeuvred her during their first encounter, it was clear things were not always as they seemed with her.
Just then, a door opens, and Lexi smiles as Cassie approaches her. “There you are!” Lexi exclaims, running up to her cousin and engulfing her in a tight hug. When they part, Lexi raises the bag she’s been holding. “This is a gift I ordered for you, for our match tomorrow!”
Cassie takes the bag and reaches in, withdrawing golden ring gear in a style similar to her own, but with a few additional details that match Lexi’s. “Thank you,” she says. “It’s very nice.”
“I thought it’d help us look more like a team,” Lexi says excitedly. “So anyway, since we’re finally hanging out together, care to give me the grand tour? I’d love to learn more about your business.”
