Not the difference between that story (women offering every passing man a condom and implying sex) vs. the well-known study where a woman would approach a man and offer him sex. In that study, each man thought (however naively) that he was getting a personal proposition.
Back to the OP story - a man can stomach the idea that his girl is selective, and selected him, and maybe selected other guys in the past. It's not what we truly want (we'd prefer a virgin) but it's okay. A huge part of the mistake OP made is revealing to her guy that she WASNT selective in the past. She had hookups, fwb, etc. The only "selection" was ...not with him.
So now he's realizing that she's not a thing of value that's worth protecting.
