Over time you hopefully amass enough knowledge from different perspectives that you come out the other side with something resembling a coherent world view.
Writing off everything someone says because they've made mistakes or had problems just hurts your own progress towards building a rigorously tested opinion on life.
I don't think either of those things make you a russiaboo. He's always come across as pretty strongly anti communist at least, from what I've seen.
