Physicists and geologists and the sort aren't as smart as you think. If something is true and has supporting evidence, it will take 30 years for the idea to gain acceptance. Usually the old people (the disonaurs never died from a meteor, copernicans) usually just die out instead of accepting arguments. There's lots of insane takes with lots of merit but without "empirical evidence" the ideas will get stomped out.
IMO the majority of people believing the official model for space is interesting because it's basically arcane knowledge. The growing portion of unga bunga flat earthers is concerning but it's what I would expect with lower attention spans, less intelligence, and declining quality of education. If it's not immediately apparent in a few seconds as to what something is or how it works, it's all lies to them.
The arrogance and stupidity of humanity, just accepting what is given to them and preferring what they have first, that's a huge driving force in history.
