First and foremost, surpassing the speed of light gives access to a new dimension of experience/being: that of the 4th dimension, Time.

For example, if you were to take a human brain that was conscious, and hurl it at the speed of light, its conscious experience would continue on while the rest of the universe was static. IF ALIENS have FTL travel, they can literally transport consciousness as the speed of light, which (if there is a full understanding of the physics of this universe) can lead to the utter transcendence form the 3rd dimension into the fourth. This is where the idea that beings made of 'pure light' stems from, these FTL species are conscious entities that can send their minds faster than light so as to experientially live in the fourth dimension and maybe beyond.
Another way to think of it, in reaching speeds that would require infinite energy to produce, you are in essence bending the "arrow" of time into a circle, allowing access at all points.
