I am so tired of the toxic masculinity on display at gyms. I am a non-binary, non-cis queer who was assigned male at birth. I joined a gym to keep slim, as I get a lot of cardio every week. But I am tired of walking past the free weights, with toxic masculinity on full display. "Bros" in tank tops bench pressing more than their body weight, making comments about the women in the gym. "Do you even lift?" "Bro, can you spot me?"
I was telling my friend about this, and she told me that there is a new woke gym opening across the country called Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness is a safe space and a no-judgement zone, and if a "lunk" grunts or drops his weights or acts in a judgemental fashion, the lunk alarm sounds and the staff deals with him. Many lunks have been cancelled from the gym if they do not agree to abide by the rules of this safe space. Yes, deadlifts are BANNED from Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness was the first gym to let assigned male trans women in the women's room. I wish every gym were like this, but at least there is one gym that allows people to escape from the toxic masculinity of the grunting, spotting, judging, deadlifting lunks who hang around the free weights.
