apparently it's a very common sort of sentiment since it's a pretty intuitive thought process. the unintuitive answer seems to be that it's not so much about learning words or grammar but more about familiarizing your subconscious with the sounds, ways words slur together, and common features of personal accents even if you're not consciously understanding any of it
honestly even if i read the explanation i just wrote at the time you recommended i watch some stuff unsubbed i probably still wouldn't believe it. listening to 30 minutes of why that makes sense makes it a lot more convincing
