The dwarves greed (essentially resources in this metaphor) & Loki's deceitful but resourceful nature (technology) is embedded in the nature of the mythological snake.
It was so clear to our ancestors that technology and money (which is also tech of course) is degenerate and must be periodically purged but will always rise again, shedding its skin and crawl beneath the roots.
There it grows while feeding on our foundations until it rises and its poison is so strong that it will kill the heros who must sacrifice himself for the promise of a better tomorrow for his kin.
