You can see this if you look down at the simplest life forms, germs are machines with no thought whatsoever, the behavior of insects is not much better, they effectively function like robots always reacting the same way to stimuli. Things get more and more complicated the higher and higher intelligence a creature has, but ultimately we are all just machines acting out a code that reacts to stimuli in various ways.
