Why the serpent approached Eve
Men would be happy to just sit in their cave by the fire and make funny noises. Women need to care for their children. As such they look for a partner that can provide for the children. This is partly done spiritually (being a good and caring father) but also materielistically. The Woman needs a man that can get food and such while she is looking after the child. From this civilization is born as men create more and more sophisticated ways to show that they can provide for the child and woo the woman.
This genetical predisposition is why the Serpent tempted Eve first, and with what did he tempt her:

Similary the serpent crawls on the ground, is attached to materialism which is biblically a cause for evil and as such is a symbol for this too, materialism and evil, and because of the womans natural predisposition it was her that the serpent approached
Basically, while not really being evil the woman caused a dominoeffect of evil
