The thing about transitioning young is that you won't need to deal with a number of problem later. You won't need to have your legal name and sex on every official sheet of paper be it driver's licences or contracts for jobs or apartments, you won't have to go out every day and stay around strangers while your body is changing, you won't have to restart your adult life once you change your name...
So 'wait until you can afford it' isn't advice I'd give or take if there was an option to have someone else help with any of it.
