If you have a reason to believe hydrogen sulfide is the problem, that's a red alert, do not depend on your sense of smell to detect it since it numbs the nerves in your nose very quickly.
If it only appears sporadically it might be some occasional backpressure problem?
If i were you i'd (safely) get a bag placed over the toilet/sink/whereever it might come from and check later if it inflated with something, then get the contents analyzed. If something harmful gets found you can get help and perhaps even sue someone.
