The first wave of American settlers either came from poverty in Europe, were drunks, or guilty of minor crimes and the Europeans figured it would be better to send them to the New World as a labor force.
That's essentially Varg's view on America and I mean, looking into lots of family trees it's pretty true. The New World was seen as a land of opportunity by people who ruined their lives in the Old World.
