i think this is related to your point about forums. i think in general in forums the opinions that will win out will be the opinions of the mods, who in most cases are free to delete and censor and ban whatever opinions they don't like. and even if the mods themselves aren't extremist, they're unilikely to ban and censor or even push back against people who agree REALLY HARD with them. same with >society
