The rate of speed is determined by the density of the medium and buoyancy determines where it settles. The thicker the medium the slower it moves since there is more to push out of the way but if the bearings were dropped in a vacuum they would stick to the field and go with the flow at the same rate of speed like a stick floating on a river.
