But if someone has no friends and has been lonely for years, then I think it's likely they have some unresolved issues that are causing it, which could be called a mental illness. They might be depressed or have problems with anxiety like agoraphobia. Extreme shyness could fall under that umbrella too. I mean mental illnesses are just terms we use to describe how we feel. They're not like normal medical problems like, say, cancer where the causes are clearly observable. Everything is a mental illness in the sense that there are a huge range of problems we might encounter when it comes to our mental health. Just because we might be mentally ill doesn't mean that it's a bad thing, though
