Usually this bullshit that they spout about being "more mature", or when they call people "sweetie", or even when they have some weird pseudointellectual belief that they want to make you believe it comes from one place. The desire to be different.
See, they can't rise above themselves and donate something to the world like all of their heros (Doctor Who, Harry Potter, ect.), because they neither have the aptitude nor are they "the chosen one". They are at their core, nihilists who don't see any point in the world, so they have to spout insane and inane things to make themselves look different from mindless drone 34020750. Becoming an adult is accepting that you've become one of these drones, but also understanding that it's up to you to make your mark if you want to. Most of us don't, most are humble enough to meek out their existence surrounded by family and friends rather than their accomplishments.
Accomplishments aren't bad either. Science, Art, ect., all need accomplishments. But if you have an inability to accomplish anything? You're forced to bend the rules and move the goalposts to make whatever you say an accomplishment. It's like not having a mouth, but trying to scream "No! Not me! I'm different!" only to fade away and have the next one, a different voice, say the same thing. They don't have a concept of living in the present because they can't comprehend the finite.
