Also apart from all of this, Dune is genuinely imaginative (junkie space navigaors, hierarchical/feudal house in a galactic imperium, selective breeding, gigantic sandworms, eyes that glow blue, anti-AI/computer holy war, etc. Despite Herbert falling away Catholicism, I believe he having been raised in it contributed to his being able to arrange and tap into suchba layered, rich, and more realistic depiction of what would happen if we were to colonize the galaxy. Gay space communism (Star Trek) and Wish dot com Dune/1776 defeats space Nazis (Star Wars) just look shallow in comparison. Fwiw, Herbert was inspired by, among other things, Tolkein. Apparently Tolkien didn't like Dune, but that is irrelevant: both creative universes capture our imagination because of the depth of creativity and rooting to human nature.
