If you wanna hear a real kicker, back when Mexico had the highest gun ownership in the world (yes even more than the US) before the 70s, it was as safe as the US or France. This is also when they were even more poor than they are today. Then in the late 60s the PRI led government killed a bunch of student protesters and was legitimately afraid of a general armed uprising so quickly enacted some of the strictest gun laws on earth and Mexicos crime rate steadily rose as only criminals held onto their gun. Notice that since the 70s Mexicos crime rate has spiked whenever the PRI was in power. Food for thought.
