How do you explain to an American whose only two literary references are Shakespeare (who he surely hasn't read or is able to understand without a dictionary), and Tolkien, that practically all literary movements and striking genres in the history of writing have either started in Asia, Europe or South America, and outside of the US Americans are widely considered to be the plebs of the literary world.
