Civilization is based on the compromise of marriage to create children and peace between the men, it's a domestication of humans. Without it, men will turn to polygamy and women to hypergamy. As less men get domesticated, they raise armies and cities; unwed bastard men are at the front of every single revolt, because they have no stake in continuing a society they're not apart of.
Romanticism is a modern concept and is completely against the very concept of marriage-- best described as a scared political and financial relationship. Once you learn that religions are simply ancient political parties, things become much clearer. Without the context of continuing some future of a group, as is the point of marriage is to expand your groups influence by chartering committed families.
