It's easy to get lost all the negative news stories that the media push. People like to ignore the fact that the United states has the highest average standard of living as well as the most freedoms of any country to have ever existed. Most people wont tell you that cause most americans will never see what its like to live/survive outside of the states/the west in general. The reason you see a constant barrage of people calling the United states shitty on this board is because they're either Americans who have no real issues to complain about, or they're simply troll posts by people from other countries. America is still universally considered the promised land for people in developing nations because they understand real struggle and know that it doesn't exist in the U.S.
Generally speaking people in the united states don't have to worry about basic life necessities like food or a house or a job as long as you're not certifiably retarded, and even then its possible to life a full life if you have the motivation. Kids generally grow up pretty sheltered due to the fact that they have all their basic needs met and therefore complain about "first world problems" much more than anywhere else in the world, I actually think this is where the 3rd wave feminist movement has its root interestingly enough.
In terms of identity I think people also like to forget that America was literally built on immigrants in one form or another. the fact that people on this board complain about immigration while 99% of Americans are of immigrant decent has always baffled me. The fact that you can have people from literally anywhere in the world live together peacefully for the most part is something that I think gives America its own unique identity, and its why I think the United States has been basically the ruling country of the world for so long, because people all over the world identify with at least some part of America.
