I studied robotics as an undergrad about 15 years ago, and what we produced was a much smaller version of this. It was fucking stupid.
Robotics is just a combination of a bunch of things: search algorithms, natural language processing, mechanical engineering, servo technology, image processing, machine learning. The vast majority of people do not understand those things, and there really is no way of making them exciting, so you get a stupid chassis like pic related and make ti do stuff to demonstrate your software. The general public and management types go "oooh" while the professor grades you on your software performance.
It's just a fucking meme. Robots live in the silicon - they don't need a body. The make your airline reservations.
