You have 86 billion neurons in your brain. That’s right—86 billion. From your birth memories to the first time you saw Fishtank Live Season 1, 2, 2.5, or 3 on YouTube, TikTok, or social media, everything you experience, feel, and remember is controlled by this vast network of neurons. Each one is connected by thousands of synapses, handling everything from language, emotion, and memory to consciousness. And we still don’t fully understand how the brain creates self-awareness. It’s the most advanced system we know, yet it remains a mystery.
Now, compare that with other species:
Dolphins – Around 1.5 billion neurons. They're highly intelligent, with complex communication and self-awareness, but not at the level of humans.
Elephants – About 257 billion neurons. They have great memory, emotional depth, and self-awareness, but lack the abstract thinking and problem-solving abilities humans possess.
Great Apes – Around 6 billion neurons. They can use tools and learn sign language, but don’t have the abstract thought or complex language humans do.
Crows and Ravens – Around 1.5 billion neurons. These birds are incredibly clever, solving problems and using tools, but still don’t match human cognition.
Dogs – About 500 million neurons. They’re highly trainable and can understand human emotions, but lack the abstract thinking humans use.
Cats – Around 250 million neurons. Smart in their own way, focused on instincts and problem-solving, but not at human cognitive levels.
While these animals are incredibly intelligent, the human brain, with its 86 billion neurons, is still the most complex and capable. We create advanced technologies, develop complex languages, and explore consciousness. And we’re only beginning to understand it.
