America during this time, including most of the South, voted in the most progressive president 4 times in a row and actually turned the Democrat Party from right-wing segregationist Conservative to the left-wing Marxist party it still is today. Americans at the time were quite literally the most retarded racists probably in recorded history.
Despite the overwhelming majority of White Americans being in favor of overtly racist policies America itself was working with the Soviet Union to topple nationalist governments all across the globe while also undoing the colonial empires of it's allies. (including ours in Indonesia)
