we don't have any traditions to look back to since these were destroyed by the essentially pragmatic, economic, and sometimes diverse nature of the colonies. every spiritual realization is for us something we must achieve by our own efforts.
the example you gave appears to you to be self-explanatory, but this is only so because it comes to you inside of an intact cultural framework. For us it may seem like nothing more than empty moralizing or platitudes unless we have built a personal substitute framework which stands in for the one you were given during your youth.
This is why the issue is much more fundamental in pure-civilization countries like the US and Australia, and no real integration with the spiritual can be achieved until metaphysical principles are rediscovered.
