I don't know about less advantageous overall but as you indirectly pointed out yourself, being landlocked is equivalent to being more isolated when it comes to global trade. Water was and still is most important for trade so being close to a nation that's close to the water doesn't necessarily mean that much.
I haven't read his books though so for all I know he backs up his claims with retarded arguments that make no sense.
