tangential to this i've heard it's really annoying trying to go places and practice foreign languages as a native english speaker because everyone ends up wanting to practice their english with you. it's not uncommon for people to learn just a phrase of something they look like they could speak natively like german or norwegian to throw out and pretend they don't speak english
