But what is a Spaniard anyway? Spain is a pseudo-empire with Catalonia, Basques, Galicia, and parts of Andalusia being practically different countries.
Regardless, not only would Portugal have been better off, but Spain would have been better off if all the territory south of the Pyrenees/France had been consolidated into a single national state, and for Portugal/Spain to have cooperated more over the last 500+ years.
