All those zombie movies and shows were to get people ready for what happens when the supply chain breaks down and civilization breaks. People turn to tribal cannibalism shockingly fast when things go sideways. Archeological studies and excavations across the planet find evidence of widespread cannibalism at the time of catastrophic events which "reset" civilization. Many cultures have old stories warning of what happens when you resort to cannibalism to survive. You turn into a monster whose cravings for human flesh override everything else. That bit of humanity you have just goes away. The prion diseases which come from cannibalism are what they were describing.
Since we got a few seasons of the Walking Dead its all good when they implode things on purpose.
