I grew up caring about my pets a lot, still love my two cats. After my parents passed though I just don't give a shit in general though. My feeling over death is ambivalent. I use to be afraid of it but now I don't really care; I'd still like to live but I'll die sometime so there's less struggle. Now when a family pet passes I just feel mildly upset, like I've become jaded.
In fact, I feel worse that I feel like I'm becoming hardened and dead inside myself than I do about actual death. I've already accepted the latter as an inevitability of life. It's no longer a surprise and I expect it on the horizon. Just like you can guarantee you'll one day step in shit again, you know it will come and just hope to generally avoid it if you can. After enough times you stop caring as much and just spray your shoe off and go along your way. Maybe that's the real mercy God grants us.
