My training was window-shopping street malls and every time I went into the store I would try to make the person behind the counter have a better day, and took ques like laughter and smiles as evidence of success. I think it made me generally much more personable and failures are more forgivable because those interactions are transient and forgettable to others if anything other than catastrophically negative.
