My guess would be that a natural characteristic of people who sit on the extreme political/racial spectrum is a superiority complex creating the perception that there opinions are somehow far more enlightened than everyone else. This causes them to be overly vocal while the rest of us just laugh at them and carry on with our day. Id say what you've just described likely characterizes the majority of people in developed/educated societies around the globe.
