well ants work just because they're tiny no? their power relative to their size wouldn't be possible because of the square cube law, the amount of resources u'd need to sustain such high numbers of those creatures if they were larger would totally annihilate any region they inhabit, and trying to just live in underground tunnels would be extremely difficult without building industrialized supports at such a scale
