Russia right now is not winning, but the tragectory is Ukraine not winning. The troops keep Ukraine pinned down and bogged down. If this keeps up eventually Ukraine will be exhausted since they can't win a war of attrition - they'd have to inflict 8 to 1 casualties to win just on numbers. Then there'd be a humiliating cease fire and the Donbass would be an endless Russian occupied territory to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO.
