this is a reference to israel apostasizing. in the prophets, the nation of israel is an unfaithful wife, a whore, and their apostasy is described as whoredom. the same thing is at play in taxi driver, where travis bickle is God, and jodie foster, called iris, is the nation of israel in whoredom.
