I think that what really woke me up to the importance of appearance was my transformation from a fat little nerdy kid with a round face and stupid glasses to someone who looks pretty decent (my parents are attractive/dad has nice face with good jawline and high cheek-bones...etc.). I wasn't a different person at all in terms of behavior or hobbies, but everyone started treating me different, and it actually made me kinda sad at the time.
