i've forever felt that 3 is the perfect number for monitors, ideally one of them being vertical. one monitor for whatever you're actively doing, a second for any reference material or things that require intermittent attention, and a third for more passive consumption when needed
i experimented with 4 at some point and when you need the 4th it's insanely useful but you start to get to a point where it takes up too much space to merit the percentage of the time you'd want to have it
