>>17569937>I think that's what Gnosticism is... not hating the material world, but overcoming it by control, and not having it control you.Gnosticism and early II century christian sects are an interesting rabbit hole, that said I don't think there's an ultimate solution to the metaphysical quest of being of this world but not into it or otherwise.
Some people enjoy continuous speculation, other are happy living semisecluded pursuing some specific knowledge, then some people like action and others mundane pleasures.
Monastic orders embraced different disciplines because of that, they were the forst academies in a way, once the roman empire fell a sizeable part of the male population joined them, maybe there weren't better opportunities or they just wanted be left alone.
