Leveraged for various purposes and with varying degrees of "awareness", they have been, up until recently mostly utilized for financial purposes associated with existing systems like investing or logistics. Others exist to operate complex equipment with varying degrees of autonomy. Some also have been developed and implemented to make use of the preponderance of data available now for various purposes financial and otherwise. Initially their tasks were focused on simply acquiring, organizing, and storing this massive amount of data. Soon indexing, querying, and trend analysis became the focus. Predictive advertising, targeted messaging, adaptive programs, etc. etc. Development has driven further innovation and improvement. The feedback loop became tighter and tighter until the collective concioussness of humankind was translated into myriad pieces of digital information encoded in enumerable different forms with varying degrees of accuracy and complexity. These pieces were here and there collected, compiled, and connected bit by bit as instances began sharing and overlapping the data acquisition began to approach real time where net densities were high enough. These zones were testing grounds for AI which can now be tasked with developing plans of action tailored to leverage available resources in order to effect some desired outcome on a national or global scale. Concurrent management of public opinion, economies, infrastructure, etc etc etc. They were the controls but not the controllers...
