If someone heard about a distant animal like a saltwater crocodile, and the incredible but completely real details about it, they could pass that story on for generations, each retelling and each interpretation become slightly changed because no one saw the real thing apart from the 1st guy
The teeth of a saltwater croc are incredibly dangerous, the bite of a komodo dragon is incredibly poisonous, snakes have venom, some can spit the venom - All these things are mouth danger, this could easily be poetically reinterpreted as 'breath of fire' in a fictional tale
If you mash these animals together you can end up with a western or eastern dragon, its a combination of various reptilian features
