it's in the name, basically humans used to live on mars and for whatever reason there was a massive nuclear apocalypse so big it obliterated the atmosphere
some humans managed to escape to earth on a ship
ALso the theory of Maldek, a planet which supposedly existed between mars and jupiter which was also destroyed entirely, the idea is that this is responsible for the asteroid belt and it would have been done by a death-star-like craft
some say those death star craft are still here, orbiting saturn, possibly abandoned
